MISSOULA, Mont. – A group of dogs from Southern California arrived at the Missoula airport on Sunday. The Humane Society of Western Montana welcomed the dogs, aiming to alleviate overcrowding in California shelters caused by recent fires.
The dogs transferred were already in California shelters, allowing those shelters to take in dogs affected by the fires. The goal is to eventually reunite those dogs with their families.

Marta Pierpoint, Executive Director of the Humane Society of Western Montana, emphasized the positive impact of the initiative. “For us what’s happening is a win-win because we’re bringing animals that need homes, so they’ll go and be adopted and some of them are being fostered right now… And so that in turn will then create the space for those in need,” she said.
The Humane Society, which is usually closed on Tuesdays, will open its doors from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. due to public interest. The dogs will be available for adoption, and Pierpoint advises the public to arrive as close to 1:00 p.m. as possible.
The Humane Society is also collaborating with other organizations across the state. Pierpoint expressed the importance of the effort, stating, “What better way to help out in a tragic situation in this.”
