Columbus North never quit during its match Monday night against Shelbyville.
The Bull Dogs fought back from set points in a couple sets to edge the Golden Bears 26-24, 23-25, 25-21, 28-26 in boys volleyball action.
It was a nice bounce back for North after going 1-3 in Saturday’s Fishers Invitational.
The Bull Dogs and Shelbyville squared off a couple days ago in the invitational. North prevailed in straight sets 26-24, 25-10 but had more work to do to claim victory Monday.
The Bull Dogs fought back from a 24-21 deficit in the first set, and then trailed 17-11 in the fourth set, only to rally in each set.
In the first set, North (3-5) led 5-0 until the Golden Bears fought back to tie the set at 10-10 and eventually take the lead at 17-15. The Bull Dogs faced set point on three different occasions when trailing 24-21 but rallied for five straight points to take the set.
In the fourth set, North led 10-7, but then Shelbyville went on a 10-1 run to lead 17-11. The Bull Dogs faced set point once again, trailing 24-23 but came back to eventually close the set and match.
“We make things happen. We were either score points for us or scoring points for the other team in a hurry,” North coach Jeff Case said. “We’ve got to work on being more consistent and a little better game composure. It’s coming. They’re definitely trying, but it’s just being in those games and going through those situations to learn how to make plays and handle the pressure.”
Leo Iorio led the Bull Dogs with 20 kills and 12 digs. Hank Lin served four aces, and Yuta Kondo finished with seven kills, three aces, two blocks and seven digs.
Also for North, Kota Kondo tallied 29 assists, Sam Gupta had seven digs and Anyu Gong added five kills.
The Bull Dogs will have another home contest later this week when they take on New Albany Thursday night.
“They’re improving. We’ve got to keep at it. Hopefully they improve enough through the season and do something,” Case said.
