It was a solid showing from Columbus North, despite the struggles from its top gymnast.
The Bull Dogs got a strong performance from freshman Hayden Harper, who won three of the four events to claim the all-around and help North to a 105.175 to 97.975 win over Roncalli.
Harper placed first on the vault (9.1), bars (8.875) and beam (9.375). She finished second on the floor (8.7) for first place in the all-around with a 36.050.
“It was really good. I’m very proud of myself. This is probably one of my best meets after Seymour,” Harper said. “I had a really good time. I felt very accomplished. I’m very proud of us. We have gone so far. A lot of the meets were a little bit of a struggle, but we pick each other up and help each other.”
Tuesday wasn’t the night for multiple-time state medalist Reese Euler. She hit her first obstacle out of the gate when she stopped on the runway to the springboard on the vault three times and couldn’t fully recover. Coach Bob Arthur said it was “mental block,” and Euler likely will bounce back.
Euler, who missed Thursday’s meet at Seymour and helped the North cheer team to an eighth-place national finish in Florida over the weekend, still placed third on the beam with 9.075.
“We had those mental blocks on a couple of different events from more than one gymnast, but Reese had her fair share of them,” Arthur said. “All I can say is, I hope she gets it out of her blood now because we’ve got some big battles coming up, and she’s going to have to have that mental toughness. All of them as I told her, I said, ‘Hey, the sun is still going to come up tomorrow.’”
Hannah Perry
Hannah Perry captured the win on the floor (9.075) and was second on the vault (9.075) to finish third in the all-around (33.925). Emerson Chambers placed fifth on the beam (8.275) and bars (8.2) for fourth in the all-around (33.425). Ellie McIntier finished third on the floor (8.65) and fourth on the vault (8.625). Peyton Hewitt was fifth on the vault (8.6) and in the all-around (33.25).
“One of the real positives with this team is the fact that we got depth. That helps take the pressure any one or group of girls because we got good people filling in behind them so we don’t feel the hits quite as bad,” Arthur said. “We got a lot of good depth. I can’t say enough about how these girls are all working. It’s almost a coach’s nightmare when we have to pare the team down to five, then down to four because they are all capable of doing the sectional, regional and state.”
