Bull Dogs bounce back with victory vs. Owls

The Columbus North softball team got back on the winning track Tuesday night against visiting Seymour.

The Bull Dogs put up two runs in the bottom of the first inning, and that was all that was needed to come away with a 3-1 victory.

After committing six errors on Monday night in a 14-13 loss to sectional foe Whiteland, North was much cleaner fielding the ball with only one error Tuesday.

“We played a lot better today. We struggled (Monday) night defensively. We hit well, but it’s a good bounce back win today,” North coach TJ Jarvis said.

Morgan Jarvis led off the bottom of the first inning for the Bull Dogs (2-4) with a single. After Jarvis stole second, Summer Williams smacked a double for a 1-0 lead. Two batters later, Miley McClellan slapped a single to increase the lead to 2-0.

Seymour cut the deficit in half in the top of the third inning when Macie Rawls led off with a single. She advanced to second on a grounder and to third on a single. A wild pitch from starting pitcher Bailee Scruggs led to Rawls scoring to make it 2-1.

Aside from the wild pitch, Scruggs had a solid performance for the Bull Dogs. She allowed just one run on six hits and nine strikeouts for the complete game.

“When she’s pitching really well and gets ahead in the count, she’s hard to hit,” TJ Jarvis said.

North added an insurance in the bottom of the sixth when Payton Morris blasted a ball over the right field fence for a solo home run.

The Bull Dogs outhit the Owls 7-6. McClellan was 2 for 3 with an RBI, Morris was 1 for 2 with the home run, Williams was 1 for 3 with the RBI-double and Morgan Jarvis, Scruggs and Hadassah Hurt all added a single.

It was a good bounce back win for the Bull Dogs after the disappointing outing Monday night.

“It’s a spark plug. Hopefully, it’s a starter,” TJ Jarvis said. “We’ve got Edgewood Thursday and then a doubleheader against Carmel on Saturday, so the schedule is not going to get any easier. It’s a strong schedule, and we want it to be strong so we can be ready for tournament time.”

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
