Archibald’s Deli was established in 1991 serving sandwiches, cream of crab soup and key lime pie in the Holden Beach area. It’s become a staple of the Brunswick County beach community. Current owner Lora Smith took over the business in 2017.
In January, she joined forces with Lisa and Chad Ragland. While Smith is still operating the deli much as it has been, there’s a new name and a new concept at 2991 Holden Beach Road S.W. in Supply.
It’s now Salty Dogs Cafe & Bark Bar. It was inspired by visits to Asheville, and a couple of other cities that have dog-friendly bars, Lisa Ragland said. Now Brunswick County has its own place for adult (people) beverages and off-leash fenced in space for dogs.
“We didn’t have anything like this here,” she said. “There isn’t even a dog park close by.”
That’s one of the reasons the partners started the business as a way to offer that, and more, to both locals and people visiting with their dogs.
On the menu
The Archibald’s Deli menu is well known for their lobster rolls, which can be enjoyed Maine style (served cold and with a house-made dill sauce) or Connecticut style (hot with drawn butter.) You can also get a variety of sandwiches and salads, quiche and other specials, and desserts.
Now, a selection of beer, wine, seltzers, cider, mocktails, and crafted cocktails are also available at Salty Dogs.
Spaces for people and dogs
The deli and restaurant operate in one on-site building with counter service and a few tables. In another cottage connected by a walkway, there’s a screened-in bar with some indoor and outdoor seating.
The dog area now works on a membership basis, Lisa Ragland said. Day passes, weekly passes and year-long memberships are available. The fenced-in dog-friendly backyard has some shaded picnic tables, Adirondack chairs, games, and tennis balls for dogs.
There’s also a stage and Ragland said she wants to offer a variety of events. Karaoke, music bingo, yoga and crafting classes are already on the schedule. There have also been movie-under-the-stars screenings and food trucks some evenings when the deli is closed. But Lisa Ragland said it’s possible they could add dinner service in the future.
