BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WBNG) — The summer days are approaching, and with that comes the influx of stray dogs.
Shelter Manager of the Broome County Dog Shelter Tiffany Wheelock explained that the adoption rate doesn’t compare to the increase in dogs brought in.
“A lot of our dogs are in smaller kennels than what we would ideally like them to be in,” Wheelock said. “A lot of people haven’t been coming to redeem their dogs and our adoptions have slowed down quite a bit.”
The shelter is currently over capacity with more than 60 dogs. It needs food, funding, as it does not receive any from the county or state, and most of all, fosters.
Kelly Day has been fostering for the shelter for a year.
“You see a dog cooped up in a kennel in a shelter with 50 other dogs near them, you’re not getting the real sense for how that dog behaves normally,” Day said.
Day encouraged anyone feeling a missing piece to take up this challenge and help the dogs and the short-staffed shelter. She also explained that patience is key when it comes to fostering.
“The reward that you feel when they find a good home is worth all of the work to get them there,” Day said.
Some of the dogs have been at the shelter since 2024. Day has been fostering the dog Boo for 8 months and hopes he finds his forever home soon.
