A unique bakery in Boston’s South End is dedicated to feeding pets with the best ingredients and bringing attention to dogs in need of a forever home.
Polkadog was founded in 2002 in honor of a one-eyed rescue dog named Pearl. She’s since become the face of Polkadog Bakery because the founders wanted to feed her only the best ingredients.
Locally made, sustainably sourced
“What else makes us really unique is that we make our own treats,” said marketing director Kelsey Sora. “So right down the road at the Boston Fish Pier, we hand roll, slowly dehydrate all of our treats, pack them up, send them here and other independent pet stores across the country.
Their treats are made with local ingredients are sustainably sourced. They’re also inspired by New England favorites, like the Green Monstah made of green crab and kelp. There’s also a treat version of clam chowder.
“The clam is a sustainable co-product, so it would otherwise be waste, so that’s why we love these ones,” said Sora.
Pup of the Month
Their store on Shawmut Avenue sees lots of customers, especially on weekend mornings when pet owners arrive with leashes in hand. Pet owners can also feel good that their purchase is going to a good cause, with Polkadog’s Pup of the Month.
” So every month, we partner with a different rescue, whether it be here locally or across the country,” said Sora. “They choose an adoptable dog that may have been overlooked. We sponsor their adoption, blast them on social media, email and send them home with a huge bundle of pet essentials.”
