TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – Toledo Police gave 13 Action News body camera footage of the minutes after an officer shot an allegedly aggressive dog. As for the moments leading up to the shooting, and the actual incident, the officer who fired four rounds at the dog, turned off his body-worn camera before approaching the animal.
“As soon as I approached it, uh, it growled at me so I backed, I took a couple steps back, but then it charged at me,” said the officer who shot the dog.
“Did you have your body cam on the whole time?” a responding officer asked him at one point in the body cam footage.
“No, I mean, it’s just a dog. I don’t … I took — it was on when I was talking to that lady, who was telling me about it, because, uh,longer I mean I usually don’t turn my body camera on for dogs,” said the officer.
We asked TPD if this violated policy. A spokesperson tells us in an email:
“The officer was no long interacting with the general public, and, based off the initial information given to him by the complainant, he did not expect the dog to be aggressive.
This, as with every firearms use, will be reviewed by ascending levels of division command, as well as, the Firearms Review Board. They will determine if there were any policy violations.”
We also asked TPD how many times this officer has shot dogs while on duty, as he references doing so in the body cam footage at least twice. We are still waiting to hear back.
