Blind dog’s “pure happiness” as Husky friend adapts so they can still play

The heartwarming way one dog has made an adjustment for her blind friend has melted hearts online.

In a video on TikTok, under the handle @nikitahusky, with more than 5 million views, Nikita the dog captured hearts with a touching gesture for her best friend Sky who recently became blind.

The video’s text overlay read: “When your bestie is recently blind, you wear bells so she can find you to play again.” Nikita, aware of her friend’s needs, now wears bells while they play, helping Sky confidently run and join in on the fun by listening for her friend’s location. The simple sound cue has allowed Sky to regain her playful side despite her new condition.

In the caption, the owner further explained: “After we found out for sure Sky was blind, Nikita will always wear bells around her so Sky can hear where she is. This has given her confidence to run and play again! You can see the pure happiness and joy in her eyes. We really don’t deserve dogs.”

Later, the owner explained that the bells aren’t worn all the time, but only when the two are playing. “Nikita and Sky’s bond is unmatched, so anything to keep that strong,” she added.

For blind dogs like Sky, small adaptations can go a long way. While vision loss can be challenging, many dogs learn to thrive using sound cues, routines and small adjustments.

There is even an International Blind Dog Day, celebrated every year on August 23. Experts advise people with a blind pet avoid moving furniture around and look for hazards that may not be visible to pets at their level—like sharp edges.

It can also help to talk more to your pet if they are blind and leave the radio on if you’re out of the house so your pet can use the sound to orient themselves.

The viral video prompted a serious outpouring of love, with hundreds of comments. One user, Shannon Durkin, wrote: “Accessibility, inclusion, and accommodation MATTER omg,” while viewer ItsmeSara wrote: “As the person of a blind dog, I appreciate this and so does she.”

Sky is far from the first blind dog to capture hearts online, like the “blind and fearless” beagle and terrier mix Peter, who is living his best life—despite the fact he bumps into pretty much everything.

A viral montage of Peter cheerfully bumping into things has delighted viewers as he walked into the wall, his crate, outdoor furniture, and other dogs to name a few things.

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
