Two rail workers have told how they felt “morally obliged” to rescue a starving and abandoned dog – taking the pet home, buying food and even forking out for vets bills.

Molly the 12-year-old boxer “looked like she had not eaten for weeks” and “was covered in injuries” when she was found near a train line at Blackpool on 26 October, the depot’s driver operations team leader said.

Scott Grimes said his team offered the dog “warmth and affection when she needed it most”, and pooled their money to cover vet bills.

Colleague Jacob Peake then took in the stricken pup with his girlfriend Nas, with the couple now looking to make the move permanent.

Mr Grimes added: “The team helped secure Molly, we offered her warmth and affection when she needed it the most.

“It is heart-warming to work with people that have similar beliefs, as we all felt morally obliged to give Molly the love she needed.”

‘Right thing to do’

Mr Peake said he also felt obligated to help Molly.

“Fostering her just felt like the right thing to do. We’ve already got a pomeranian called Kiki but we’ve always wanted to give a home to a rescue,” he said.

“Kiki has never got on with other dogs but she likes Molly, who is so laid back and relaxed.”

Mr Peake said Molly was now “coming a long way each day”.

“At first, she would just eat and sleep all day but now her personality is starting to shine through,” he added.

“Today was the first time she ran up to me wagging her tail.”
