Some say they prefer cats over dogs. But it’s hard not to fall a little bit in love when approached by an affectionate dog with sad eyes and long eyelashes. When you’ve bonded with a dog, nothing matches that feeling when they look at you with so much trust and love.
For dog lovers Naomi Watts and Bill Murray, working with Bing, their Great Dane co-star in The Friend, was a bonus to making a movie they’re both proud of. “There’s so much kindness and empathy in this creature, and I just think we all need that right now,” Watts told Bleecker Street Films.
Meanwhile, Murray has had dogs all of his life but has had a tough time moving on from his last beloved dog.
Naomi Watts & Bill Murray Admit They’ve Always Had Dogs
Both Murray and Watts admit that dogs have been an important and essential component of their lives. “Dogs are the most loving, loyal friends that you can have,” Watts told the Dodo during a Dodo Dream Date with rescue dog Gigi. “And I have always had a dog, personally. I cannot imagine a life without a dog.” Murray admitted to People that he’s also always had dogs. The only reason he doesn’t now is because his last dog was so special to him.
“I lost a dog a bit ago and I have yet to replace him because he was a towering figure,” Murray said. “I can’t even imagine any dog being as wonderful as he. I think it’s going to come. I mean, I think about it more all the time. I’m surrounded by people that have, not one, but multiple dogs. So I kind of get my dog fix a little bit. But I realize it’s not the same as having somebody that’s yours.”
Naomi Watts and Bill Murray’s Friendship Set the Stage for Their Heartfelt Scenes in The Friend
In their new movie, The Friend, Watts’ character, Iris, and Murray’s character, Walter, are supposed to be best friends. The tricky part was conveying that bond through very few scenes together in the film. Luckily, the two met during the filming of 2014’s St. Vincent and became fast friends. This enabled Watts to pull from their real-life bond for their heartfelt scenes.
“It was good having known Bill and connected with him to recall all of that so that when they do come together at the end, there’s a conjuring that feels really authentic,” she told People. “And yeah, she can just slam him with all of her feelings. So there was just a good shorthand and a trust that we achieved.”
After making St. Vincent together, Murray was excited to work with Watts again. “We made a good movie and we got to know each other professionally and like each other professionally,” he told People. “And then we ended up liking each other as friends. So that when this possibility came, it was easy to consider, that we could make it work again. And we did.”
