SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) — A one-year-old baby who was attacked by dogs Monday has died.

The Bexar County Medical Examiner says the child has been identified as Jiryiah Johnson.

According to Sheriff Javier Salazar, Johnson was being babysat by 36-year-old Heather Rodriguez at her home in Converse.

Rodriguez reportedly placed the child in a room and shut the door to keep him away from the dogs, but they managed to get into the room and attacked the boy.

Rodriguez’s 13-year-old daughter, who was also in the room, got into a tug of war with the dogs as she tried to rescue the 1-year-old. She managed to wrestle him away and ran into a bathroom to hide, but the dogs managed to get through that door as well.

The teen was able to run into another room with the baby where she waited for help.

Johnson was rushed to a hospital with bite wounds to his face, head, neck and throat but he died late Monday night.

Sheriff Salazar says they arrested Rodriguez on a charge of injury to a child with serious bodily injury by omission and more charges may be filed. He also called her daughter a “hero” for trying to rescue the baby.

Salazar says the dogs are “XL pits” and deputies have responded to calls about the dogs in the past.

The dogs have been turned over to Animal Care Services.
