Firefighters rescued a dog in a pet crate on the second floor of a St. Lawrence home that was discovered on fire Tuesday morning after the owner left for work.
The fire was discovered about 7:30 a.m. by a passerby who saw flames and smoke from a second-floor window of the middle-of-row townhouse in the 3900 block of Penns Drive, according to Exeter Township Fire Department Deputy Chief Chris Jordan.
Responding to the 911 call, firefighters found a room on fire on the second floor, Jordan said. They stretched a hose line to the second floor and contained the fire to the room of origin.
Responders led two free-roaming dogs in the home to safety but learned a third dog was in a crate on the second floor, Jordan said. The dog, suffering from smoke inhalation, was carried to an ambulance crew that applied a breathing apparatus designed for dogs.
The owner eventually took the dog to an animal hospital. Information on the dog’s condition was unavailable.
Crews from the Lower Alsace and Mount Penn fire companies and the Reading and Birdsboro-Union fire departments also responded.
“The crews did a great job containing the fire,” Jordan said, “and also rescuing the dog from the second floor.”
There was significant damage to the room where the fire started, and some repairs and work by a restoration contractor will be needed before the owner can reoccupy her home, he said.
A damage estimate was unavailable.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
