BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) — Street Dog Hero is a Bend-based nonprofit dog rescue organization that has been involved in helping animals in communities around the world. Their latest effort bears that out, as SDH paired up with Kabul Small Animal Rescue to bring eight dogs from Afghanistan to Bend.
Street Dog Hero is taking in eight dogs from Afghanistan, five of which have arrived and are to be fostered early next week. The other three are due later.
It was part of a very large rescue effort by Kabul Animal Rescue, where in a week’s time they have flown out 300 dogs an cats from a shelter in Afghanistan that was being shut down.
“All of the animals needed somewhere to go or else they were going to end up on the streets,” SDH said in an Instagram post. The Kabul organization reached out to over 40 pet rescues across the US and UK, seeking help.
KSAR’s founder and director, Charlotte Maxwell-Jones, remained in Afghanistan after U.S. troops were withdrawn to keep her shelter open, taking care of hundreds of animals over the last two years.
Kelsey McGee is speaking Wednesday with staff at Street Dog Hero to learn more about the dogs that are many miles away from their former home. She will be meeting the dogs that have come to Bend, and learn more about efforts to get them into loving homes. Her report will be on NewsChannel 21 at Five.
