More than 50 dogs are on a lifesaving journey to find new homes, with some heading out of state to Maryland and others destined for Canada.
Viviana Lopez from Beaumont Animal Care said, “We have one of our transports heading out of state to Maryland. We’ll have a total of about 21 dogs leaving our shelter today to a whole new rescue where they already have people waiting for them.”
The dogs are part of a monthly transport effort by volunteers with Forever Homes Dog Rescue of Southeast Texas, who is also transporting 39 additional dogs to Canada. Jeanine Christian from the rescue group described the challenges of the journey. “The border crossing is always a challenge because making sure we have all our paperwork, making sure everything is correct going across. It is stressful making sure that the dogs aren’t getting sick or that the dogs aren’t getting too stressful. Having to make sure that you’re watching, feeding, walking, watering all of them,” she said.
Christian highlighted the demand for adoptable dogs in Canada, where shelters are often empty. “Their shelters are empty. People go on waiting lists which is shocking to us down here. It’s a blessing, because without Canadians and anybody up north we wouldn’t be able to have anywhere for these dogs to go,” she said.
Beaumont Animal Care is seeking donations from the community to continue these transports and help all its animals find loving homes, regardless of the distance. The shelter also encourages people to sign up as fosters if they are unable to donate.
