Batavia Downs welcomes 80 dogs for wiener race

BATAVIA, N.Y. — You’ve heard of horse racing and pig racing, but have you ever heard of wiener racing?

Batavia Downs Gaming welcomed dozens of dachshunds on Sunday for its annual wiener dog race and family fun day.

Each “heat” winner received free play but the top three finishers in the championship race received food vouchers and a free hotel stay in addition to free play.

The race began at 2 p.m. on the racetrack, and other activities started at noon, including pony and carriage rides, pumpkin decorating, face painting, and a kettle corn stand.

Michael Sparling, A.K.A Mr. Scribbles, was also in attendance, creating cartoons for children from their own scribbles. According to his website, he has attended festivals across New York State for over 20 years.

“Our annual Family Fun Day and Wiener Dog Races are a staple of the fall here at Batavia Downs,” president and CEO Henry Wojtaszek said in a statement.

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
