BASEHOR, Kan. (KCTV) – Earlier this month, what was supposed to be a routine haircut for Dilly turned into an emergency trip to the vet according to his owner.
“I was shocked,” said his owner, who didn’t want to be shown on camera. “I had to have my daughter take a picture of it. She immediately said we are going to the vet now.”
The owner’s niece, Maggie Yonker, says they took Dilly to Just for Dogs Grooming in Basehor, Kan., and during his haircut, he was cut on his neck and front paw.
“They proceeded with the haircut as normal despite the fact that he was bleeding profusely,” said Yonker. “When they were done, they put him in a kennel. They called my aunt saying she could come pick him up. My aunt goes and picks him up and he has this giant cut on his body. They say it’s just a nick. She ended up getting him home and realizing just how bad it was.”
They ended up taking him to the vet, located next door to the groomers. “The vet was shocked,” said Dilly’s owner. “He used the term fillet of his neck. Couldn’t believe he wasn’t screeching in pain.”
“The vet measured with his hands and said it was only a half centimeter from his jugular vein, which is absolutely insane,” said Yonker.
They say Dilly has been a customer at Just for Dogs Grooming for years.
“With the vet next door, there’s just no excuse for the negligence,” she said. They say they went back to speak to the business. They say the groomer was very apologetic and reimbursed the family out of her own pocket, but they are still upset with the store manager who they say mishandled the situation.
“The store manager just blowing it off and just saying it was nothing and not even offering an apology,” said Yonker.
“You could have just called me, you could have just said I’m sorry, you couldn’t have just a lot of things,” said Dilly’s owner. “Right there says you didn’t care that much.”
KCTV5 reached out to Just for Dogs Grooming multiple times requesting an interview or statement. We did not hear back.
Several stitches later, Dilly is on the mend and back to running around in the backyard. His owner says they won’t be returning to the business.
“I won’t be taking my dog back and I have a lot of friends who won’t be going there either,’ said Dilly’s owner.
