Barking frogs? A woman complained about her neighbor’s noisy dogs — but she couldn’t have been more wrong

Oft times it’s the neighbors complaining about noisy Airbnb guests. But what do you do when it’s the other way around?

A woman on holiday with her family in Vietnam had to deal with the neighbors’ “dog” barking incessantly night and day. Concerned, not only that it was keeping her children awake but also for the wellbeing of the pooch, she made inquiries. However, they would result in a most surprising discovery.

Frogs that bark like dogs

Natalie told Newsweek that she and her family had been on holiday in Huyan, Vietnam in January and that for two weeks they had to put up with nonstop barking coming from the house next door. The sound was inescapable within their vacation rental and even though she thought that one “can’t really complain about dogs barking” she expressed her worries to the owner of the rental.

“It didn’t seem normal,” she said.

However, the neighbors said that their dog was fine, in its cage and not in any torment or misery. Perhaps not completely convinced, she called local animal welfare groups.

The family left to continue their travels around Southeast Asia but returned two weeks later. Still concerned about the poor little canine, Natalie inquired again about the dog with the owner. That’s when she learned what had really been making all the distressing yelps.

She was told that it had been barking tree frogs all along. Natalie remembered she was aghast saying, “I was like, ‘What are they talking about?’”

“I feel a little embarrassed”

A quick online search revealed that sure enough, the Vietnamese mossy frog is also known as the barking tree frog. The southern US is home to barking tree frogs as well, and they do make quite the ruckus during mating season.

Natalie decided to get a firsthand look at her noisy neighbors. For posterity sake she took a video of the little critters and posted it on social media.

“They’re absolutely tiny, but they go all day and all night. I thought it was one dog setting off another, but no—it’s frogs!” she shared. “It’s so funny. I feel a little embarrassed I contacted all these animal charities. But at least I tried.”
