AUSTIN, Texas — 54 dogs have been housed from Austin Pets Alive in the recent weeks amongst the Texas winter weather.
With the community’s help, the rescue found foster homes for 49 dogs and adoptive homes for 5 dogs.
The shelter originally started the week with 118 dogs and ended with 64.
Austin Pets Alive has heaters in every building, along with wind barriers and additional generators in case of extreme weather.

The winter weather protocols at the rescue are:
- All kennel buildings have overhead heaters, permanently set at 65 degrees.
- Below 50 degrees: Heaters are on, kennel tarps are down, small dogs and puppies are closed in kennels or brought inside, and sweaters and extra blankets are provided as needed
- Below 40 degrees: The above applies, as well as active temp monitoring by MOD
- Below 30 degrees: The above applies, plus all dogs are closed inside kennels and shortened play groups and walks are adjusted as needed
“Our teams are giving the remaining pups all the love, care, and attention they need to ensure their safety and warmth as we continue to work to place them in homes,” Austin Pet’s Alive said in a press release.
Austin Pets Alive is open from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. daily.
