AUSTIN, Texas — More than two dozen dogs are on the mend after they were rescued from unhealthy conditions on Tuesday.
The Austin Humane Society (AHS) said it assisted in a rescue effort involving more than 30 dogs living on a single property in Bastrop County. AHS said in a coordinated rescue with Bastrop County Animal Service, 19 of the dogs were taken to AHS on Tuesday afternoon.
The shelter said the dogs had been primarily living outdoors as part of a breeding operation of “doodle” dogs, so most of them are doodle mixes ranging in age from 3 months to 5 years old.
AHS said the dogs were suffering from fur matting and flea infestation, and three dogs have tested positive for heartworms. The 19 dogs in the shelter’s care are currently undergoing medical and behavioral evaluations, but AHS said they will soon be available for adoption.
Adoption inquiries can be made online on AHS’s website, and adoption fees range from $85 to $200. All of the dogs will be spayed/neutered, microchipped, treated for parasites and given age-appropriate vaccinations before heading to their new homes.
AHS said in addition to adopters, it is also accepting donations to support the dogs’ care.
