Athenians welcome newly renovated Memorial Park dog park

The Memorial Park dog park reopened on Tuesday, July 9 after undergoing renovations to replace a century-old sewer line, according to a press release. Memorial park is located in the Five Points neighborhood at 293 Gran Ellen Drive.

Many Athenians took advantage of the dog park’s reopening, including dog owner and associate professor of linguistics at the University of Georgia, Vera Lee-Schoenfeld. Lee-Schoenfeld owns a dog named Penny that her family adopted from the Athens Humane Society when Penny was two months old.

“Ever since then [the park’s closure], we’ve been walking past to see if it was opening or anywhere close to opening and so now we’re excited it’s open,” Lee-Schoenfeld said.

During its renovations, the park added amenities such as improved fencing with entryways and exits, new water foundations, shaded benches and new concrete pathways with improved accessibility.

Dog owner and UGA alum James Dornbush said that he and his wife, UGA alum Katherine Dornbush, moved to the Five Points neighborhood and have been anticipating the park’s reopening ever since. James and Katherine Dornbush own Peach and George, two energetic “bordoodles,” which are Border Collie and Standard Poodle mixes.

“We have friends that are in apartments and they don’t even have a dog park or anything like that,” James Dornbush said. “It is giving people places to bring their dogs and…have places for [the dogs’] energy to get out. It’s [also] a really important spot for socialization.”

The Dornbushes said that right now, they are “focused on puppy socialization,” and that the new park will help them achieve this.

“It’s nice having a dog park that [Peach] can meet other dogs at once it’s a little more populated,” Katherine Dornbush said.

Lee-Schoenfeld’s son, Dominik Lee, said that he also appreciates the social aspect of dog parks like Memorial Park’s, not only for the canines, but for people as well.

“It’s good [that] the community has a chance to come together over something like dogs because I feel like dog owners can really interact with each other with their dogs,” Lee said.

While Memorial Park’s dog park was undergoing renovations, Katherine Dornbush frequented Wiggley Field Dog Park, which is about a 15 minute drive from Memorial Park. Now that the park has been reopened, she is excited to have access to a dog park close to home.

“Being in like the Five Points community, it’s really easy to get over here and it’s really nice having a big dog park in your backyard,” Katherine Dornbush said.

The dog park is now open everyday from 8 a.m. to sunset with some exceptions. Currently, on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays, the park will open at noon due to turf maintenance.

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
