Three dogs were discovered abandoned in a home that didn’t have heat or electricity, according to police. It’s believed the owner had moved out in September.
ASHLAND, Maine — A woman from Ashland is facing charges for allegedly moving out of a residence and leaving three dogs behind.
The Ashland Police Department and state animal humane officials executed a search warrant at a home on Fenderson Rd. in Ashland on Jan. 8, according to a press release posted on the department’s social media account Wednesday. Officials said they received a report that dogs were abandoned by their owner.
During the search, police found three dogs abandoned in the residence, according to the press release. They didn’t have any water or food and were living in their own excrement and urine, officials said.
The dogs showed physical evidence of severe neglect. The building didn’t have any heat or electricity, so the dogs were also living in sub-zero temperatures and in the dark for long periods of time, police said.
“Exhaustive investigation revealed the owner of the dogs had moved out of the residence in September after power had been shut off, leaving the animals behind,” the press release stated.
The three dogs were taken to Presque Isle for medical care. They were placed at an animal shelter in Presque Isle “pending court disposition,” police said.
The dogs owner, 38-year-old Miranda Burby of Ashland, is facing three counts of animal cruelty, according to police. She was summoned to appear at Presque Isle District Court in March.
