ASHEVILLE, N.C. (FOX Carolina) – A therapy dog with the Asheville Police Department won a national award after her efforts to support the community and first responders following Hurricane Helene.
Officer Kora, a rescued 3-year-old Goldendoodle, joined the police force in 2023 after graduating from Highland Canine Training. She is one of only two therapy dogs in the Carolinas certified by the U.S. Police Canine Association.
Officer Kora competed with therapy dogs nationwide to win the 2024 First Responder Paws Therapy Dog Award by FHE Health.
“Kora is more than a therapy dog; she represents hope, compassion, and resilience for our community,” said her handler, Senior Police Officer Debbie LeCroy.
Kora helped with relief and recovery efforts when Hurricane Helene struck the Western Carolinas in September. She also provides comfort to first responders and crime victims.
