As organizations step in to help dogs abandoned in Boone Co., one says the problem is much bigger

WREX — After over 50 dogs were abandoned in Boone County following Sunday night’s storms, several organizations stepped in to care for the dogs. However, one of the organizations said the issue has now extended even further.

Dogs Rescued Being Transferred to Foster Homes

Kim Morgan is the director of Jellystone Barks Rescue Rangers and has been helping to care for abandoned dogs for close to two decades.

However, she said this week has brought something she had never seen.

“This dumping is just something new and I have not seen this in the past. I’ve been doing this for 17 years. I’ve never seen dogs just turn up,” Morgan said.

After stepping in Monday following the round of storms to help in Boone County, Morgan said their situation was beyond unfair to the animals.

“They were fairly close to a road. With the tornado and the lightening and the downpours that we had I mean it was just really cruel,” she said.

However, Morgan said the abandoned dogs are now turning up elsewhere, leaving her and her partners to spend the week traveling around Illinois and to Wisconsin to pick up over 30 more.

“It’s pretty unusual for dogs to just be dumped like this and to be so many of them in so many different municipalities. It’s not like these dogs walked, you know? A two-hour ride to all these different locations,” Morgan said.

Now the organization is stepping in to evaluate the dogs, getting them into the vets as they hope to help with not only their physical health but their emotional health.

“For them I mean they’re scared. They really are desperate for somebody to just hold them and tell them that everything’s going to be okay,” she said.

Despite 17 years of helping animals under her belt, this week will go down in history for Morgan as she said both herself and the cities affected are looking towards solving the problem.

“It’s probably the most bizarre thing that we’ve had happen in rescue and we see a lot of bizarre things happen,” Morgan said.

The abandoned dogs will be up for adoption following their vet checkups.

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
