CUMRU TWP., Pa. – The Animal Rescue League of Berks County (ARL) has issued a Code Red for Tuesday through Saturday.
Under the advisory, anyone in Reading with a dog is required to bring the animal inside during certain hours, except for supervised bathroom breaks and exercise.
“We do encourage anyone with animals outside to adhere to that code as well,” said Ashley Mikulsky, CEO of the ARL.
Under Code Red, animal control can remove and impound an animal at the ARL for anyone who fails to comply.
Owners will have 48 hours after the advisory is lifted to pick up their pets and will be subject to boarding fees.
Mikulsky said the heat can catch up to pets in minutes.
“Especially if they’re left in a hot car with the windows closed, so please take extra precautions. This heat is very dangerous,” said Mikulsky.
Meanwhile, a military-grade air conditioning unit was brought in to help the ARL after air conditioning units in two kennels broke on Friday.
The community helped raise money for the new unit.
“It was amazing. People showed up for us in ways we didn’t even imagine. We were able to cover the cost of this project as well as raise a little extra which will be used for other capital improvements and an ice cream party on Tuesday for the dogs,” said Mikulsky.
The ARL says to really limit your pets’ time outdoors during this heat and to be very careful on blacktop, which can heat up quickly.
