SCOTTSDALE, AZ (AZFamily) — With triple-digit heat in Arizona comes even hotter pavement.
In the summer, outdoor surfaces can be much hotter than air temperatures making simply being outside extremely dangerous for a pup’s paws.
AZ Pet Vet in Scottsdale offered some tips to keep your dog’s paw pads from being painfully burned.
Paw booties are a great, vet-recommended option for keeping the heat away, but dog owners should be cautious when using them.
“They do help keep the heat off the paws, but you do have to be careful on how long you’re using them for,” Dr. Wesley Arnold said. “They do sweat through their paws, so they could get little infections and stuff. You also want to make sure you’re training your dogs, and they’re comfortable in them.”

Advice for protecting paws from heat
- Avoid walks during hotter times of the day
- Exercise dogs somewhere without pavement
- Get a good set of breathable dog booties
- Properly measure paws for the best bootie size
- Make sure the booties fit your dog’s lifestyle
Dr. Arnold said it’s a good idea to check your dog’s paws regularly during the summer and monitor their behavior for any signs of extreme heat exposure, such as burning or scarring.
“If you can’t put your foot down yourself for 10 seconds, your dog shouldn’t be out there anyways,” Dr. Arnold said.
