CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A new citywide survey conducted by Take Spruce reveals that Charlotte residents are reaping major physical and emotional benefits from their dogs.
A compelling 81% of dog owners say they’re more physically active thanks to their furry companions, and the data reflects a rising trend of pet-influenced wellness in Queen City living.
The online poll, which surveyed 500 dog owners in Charlotte, found that dog walking has become a dominant motivator for regular movement. Respondents most commonly cited frequent walks along Little Sugar Creek Greenway (86%), dog play at parks like Frazier or Romare Bearden (72%), and neighborhood trail hikes (33%) as key ways they stay active.
Beyond movement, dogs also contribute to emotional stability and daily joy. Seventy percent of Charlotte dog owners say they feel emotionally stronger thanks to their pets, citing help managing work-from-home stress (63%) and creating moments of calm amid the city’s fast-paced lifestyle (60%).
Charlotte dog owners also report that their pets enhance their mood an average of eight times daily — from playful sessions in the park (74%) to simple moments of cuddles or quiet companionship at home (66%).
Key Findings:
Major Uptick in Physical Activity: 81% of Charlotte dog owners say they’re more active because of their dogs, walking popular city greenways (86%), playing at dog-friendly parks (72%), and exploring local trails (33%).
Emotional Wellness Boosts: 70% of respondents say their emotional health has improved, especially through comforting routines (63%) and companionship that offsets the stress of urban living (60%).
Daily Mood Enhancers: Dogs bring joy an average of eight times per day through energetic play (74%), physical affection (69%), and a calming home presence (66%).
Better Routines in a Busy City: 49% of Charlotte dog owners say their pets help them maintain a healthy daily schedule, and 52% say their dogs are their main motivator to go outside on busy or down days.
Deepened Bonds Amidst Urban Life: 88% say that training their dog has improved their relationship, while 36% say that the process has helped them feel more grounded amidst city distractions.
“These results show just how integral dogs are to Charlotte’s well-being,” says Tony Spencer, CEO of Take Spruce. “Whether you’re working remotely in South End or navigating the bustle of Uptown, dogs offer a routine, a reason to move, and a daily source of happiness and balance.”
Spencer continues, “We’ve noticed a 13% year-over-year increase in Google searches from the Charlotte region for terms like ‘dog-friendly trails and ‘pet health support’, which aligns directly with the survey’s findings about growing interest in canine wellness.”
Dogs are more than companions in Charlotte — they’re becoming wellness partners. From stretching legs in Freedom Park to winding down after a hectic day, the influence of pets is increasingly clear in how locals are shaping their routines and coping with modern life.
Take Spruce’s Tony sums it up: “If you’re a Charlotte resident looking to live a more active and emotionally balanced life, a dog might just be your best new wellness coach.”
