Architecture students partner with Dog Star Rescue to design a facility that triples its size.
BLOOMFIELD, Conn. — Architecture design students from A.I. Prince Technical High School in Hartford are mixing blueprints and paw-prints, partnering with Bloomfield-based Dog Star Rescue to design the animal rescue’s new facility.
The collaboration will help complete an 8,000-square-foot facility that will triple the size of Dog Star Rescue’s current operations, according to Nichole Fortenbaugh, the rescue’s executive director.
“We’re going to have more kennels, we’re going to have more top-of-the-line HVAC systems, more pet pantries, and tons of different opportunities,” Fortenbaugh said.
Prince Tech students created renderings of blueprints for the new facility. Nick DellaCamera, an architecture instructor at the school, said the collaboration brought existing designs to life.
“The design was there, we had to do renderings to bring it to life,” DellaCamera said. “We really wanted to showcase what this build will be and the greatness it will provide for all the dogs and the community.”
Prince Tech junior Tamajje Jones said he was excited to contribute to the project.
“It’s amazing that I can help out dogs and the dog rescue,” Jones said. “I’m so happy I can help dogs get off of the streets and get into a nice loving home.”
The project has been about a year in the making. The new Dog Star Rescue facility is scheduled for completion in September.
Fortenbaugh said the new facility represents a significant milestone for animal rescue efforts in Connecticut.
“Dog Star’s new home is basically the start of forever homes for all dogs,” she said. “I think it’s going to be a huge paw print in Connecticut’s rescue history.”
Dog Star Rescue is a nonprofit, all-volunteer organization based in Bloomfield.
