Animal shelters team up to rescue 82 dogs from Grimes County home

GRIMES COUNTY, Texas (KBTX) – More than 80 dogs were found in a Bedias home after an elderly couple’s health took a turn, and they became overwhelmed with overbreeding.

It’s a case of good intentions that turned into one of the largest rescue efforts the county has ever seen.

“In that portion of the county, we had had a lot of dump dogs and things like that, and they were the ones to take them in and feed them and give them a home and everything, and it just got it way out of control for them,” Grimes County Livestock Deputy Gabriel Mendez told KBTX.

Deputy Mendez said it was about a month ago that the homeowners reached out to him.

“It started out as a cry for help,” Deputy Mendez said.

Over the years, health issues left the couple’s situation unmanageable.

“They love their dogs,” Deputy Menzes explained. “They were to the point where they were feeding the dogs before they fed themselves.”

However, after years of litter after litter, the couple turned to Deputy Mendez and Grimes County Animal Rescue for support.

Quickly, they realized they couldn’t do it alone, so Aggieland Humane Society stepped in to help in the rescue mission.

“Seeing how many people care about this situation and the animals is amazing to see,” Grimes County Rescue Supervisor Jailah MacKay said. “I hope it continues.”

Over the past 10 days, both organizations and several other animal service agencies have teamed up to rescue more than 40 dogs from the home, with many now in foster homes and a few already adopted.

“Being able to work together and collaborate to solve this problem is truly so heartwarming to know that we are all a team,” Aggieland Humane Society Executive Director Katrina Ross said. “We are all working together to save lives.”

Grimes County Animal Rescue said they hope to get the last group of dogs out next week.

In the meantime, Grimes County and Aggieland Humane ask the community for foster homes, donations of any kind, and help spreading the word so every dog can have the chance at a new life.

Rescuers say this case raises bigger questions about responsible pet ownership.

“It’s important to get your pet spayed or neutered so that things like this don’t happen,” MacKay explained. “The sooner you can get them spayed and neutered, the less likely you are to end up in situations like this because one dog can turn into 100 dogs in just a couple of years.”

Both MacKay and Ross told KBTX that this situation is exactly why spaying and neutering pets is so important.

They explained that when dogs are not fixed, they can reproduce quickly, sometimes faster than owners can manage.

“We know that just one breeding pair very quickly can turn into these situations where you have 80-plus pets in one household,” Ross said. “Having your pets fixed is one key way that you can help solve our community problem of pet overpopulation.”

Any long-term changes depend on the community, Ross added.

“We have our mobile spay neuter unit, and we try to spay and neuter as many pets as we can,” she said. “We understand that it goes beyond just what we can do, and it requires folks being willing to get their pets fixed.”

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
