CLARENCE, Iowa (KCRG) – Disappointed.
That’s how those with the Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL) say they feel after removing more than 60 dogs from one unlicensed breeder in less than two years.
The Cedar County Sheriff’s Office confirmed some of the dogs were removed from two properties in Clarence.
The breeder surrendered 30 dogs in 2023 and another 32 dogs on Friday.
The Animal Rescue League out of Des Moines was called in to take the dogs.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the dogs were being neglected and didn’t have proper access to food, water, and shelter.
The ARL is already at capacity, so it made emergency overflow space to house the dogs.
“Summer is a busy time anyway. The dog numbers are up from last year that are coming in, both stray and owner surrendered. So it comes at a time where we’re already full. That’s been the particular challenge on this,” ARL’s CEO Tom Colvin said.
Colvin said the breeder is unlicensed, so the location wasn’t being inspected.
No charges were filed against the property owner after 2023’s surrender, and so far, no charges have been filed in Friday’s surrender.
TV9 asked the Cedar County Attorney’s office why charges haven’t been filed and it declined to answer.
