Animal lovers outraged after 4 dogs found abandoned in cage by road in El Paso area

The El Paso area has plenty of good traditions. Unfortunately, abandoning pets in cruel ways too often seems to be one of them.

The Instagram account therealfitfamelpaso updated the online community about the latest incident of pet abandonment, this one involving four dogs that were abandoned by the side of the road in the far East El Paso area.

Accompanying a photo of the abandoned dogs was a post, stating: “Residents on O’Shea Road (Montana Vista) woke up to an appalling-yet-common sight this morning: four dogs had been abandoned in a kennel alongside the road. The Animal Services team was called and the canines were taken in. Credits: @pos.el_oscar. #fitfamep”

Comments in response to the post ranged from one suggesting whoever dropped off the animals suffer the same fate to one noting that at least the dogs were placed in a kennel, which kept them from being hit by vehicles.

Temperatures in the El Paso have regularly climbed past 100 degrees recently.

Montana Vista is an unincorporated area in El Paso County that isn’t as densely populated as the city of El Paso, making it easier to abandon pets without being seen by witnesses.

Other cases of animal abandonment also caused anger in the community.

  • A bullet was found in a husky that was abandoned in nearby Horizon City, Texas, in July 2021. Video of the dog being dropped off as people drove off also sparked outrage. Two people were arrested.
  • In May 2021, a man was arrested after being accused of dropping off a pit bull mix near an East El Paso park. The dog chased the vehicle as it drove away.

The latest case comes as the city’s Animal Services department faces a crisis from an influx of pets.

In a Facebook post, the department said: “Can you believe we’ve received over 540 pets since July 1st,” with photos from some of the recently admitted animals.

The post adds: “If you recognize any of these dogs, please come reclaim them or let their owner know they are at the shelter!”

Animal Services states that it has more than 960 pets at the shelter, adding “we urgently need fosters or adopters, please come by if you can help!”

It adds, “All that’s needed to foster is to be older than 18, have a photo ID, and live within EP County — and supplies are provided!”

It said that even though some pets are being fostered by the people who found them and are not at the shelter, they still can be reclaimed. Animal services, which is at 5001 Fred Wilson Ave. in Northeast El Paso, is open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week. It’s website states that cat drop-off is from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday through Thursday. People can call 311 for animal-related concerns and emergencies. The department’s number is 915-212-PAWS (7297).

Cruelty convictions involving abandoning an animal are punishable as a Class A misdemeanor, which could include a fine up to $4,000, jail time up to a year, or both. If the conviction is a third offense, it can be a state jail felony, which under Texas law may include jail time ranging from 180 days to two years and a fine up to $10,000, according to the Texas Humane Network.

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
