Animal Control rescues 20 malnourished dogs from hoarding situation at Muscatine home

MUSCATINE, Iowa (KCRG) – Animal Control rescued 20 dogs from what they called “horrible” living conditions at a home in Muscatine on Thursday.

Police received an anonymous tip about the dogs, which Muscatine Animal Control Officer Courtney Patel says were “dirty and malnourished.”

Director of the Muscatine Humane Society Chris McGinnis said most of the dogs are large dogs, and they came from a hoarding situation.

McGinnis also said the Humane Society is short-staffed.

The facility was closed Thursday as staff took in the animals, and it has remained closed Friday as staff members continue to care for the animals.

The facility is expected to reopen Saturday.

“The City will not tolerate neglect or abuse of animals,” Patel said. “Thanks to the anonymous citizen we were able to rescue them and, with the Humane Society’s help, we will be able to find them better homes.”

While Patel said hoarding situations like this are not new, there has been an unusual number of similar situations.

“The most important thing for the public to do is if they see something, say something,” Patel said. “The smell around a home may be the first clue that something is not right, and we again urge citizens to call the police station and we will investigate.”

City officials said ownership of the dogs will be determined during a court hearing at a later date.

The case remains under investigation. Charges have not been filed at this time.

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
