NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) — The Animal Care Centers of NYC are moving 300 animals from a Brooklyn facility to a brand-new center in Queens, and the organization is seeking short-term foster homes for large dogs to help the transition run smoothly.
“We have close to 150 dogs alone, so that’s why we are trying to get people to do a short-term foster, even just a few days, so that we can stagger the intake into our Queens shelter,” Katy Hansen, director of marketing and communications at ACC, told 1010 WINS.
By the end of July, the center’s dogs will be transferred to the Paul A. Vallone Queens Animal Care Center in Ridgewood as the Brooklyn Animal Care Center begins a two-year renovation.

“Any type of move can be stressful,” according to Hansen, and with shelters across the country bursting at the seams, she said that giving the ACC’s large furry friends a break from the moving process would be good for them.
“What this short-term foster will do will allow the dog to decompress a little in a home,” Hansen said. “A quiet home, where they can be walked, where they can sleep as much as they want, and really just get them settled.”
The ACC will provide all of the supplies necessary for a successful foster, as well as a Lyft to and from the shelters when transporting a foster dog, the nonprofit said.
Foster dogs can be picked up from the Brooklyn facility in East New York between July 19-21, or earlier. Dogs can be dropped off at the new Queens facility between July 26-28, or later.
Those interested can fill out a temporary foster form online, and sign up for a virtual large dog orientation.
There is an orientation planned for Sunday at 11 a.m., with another on Monday at 6 p.m.
