An Altamonte Springs man is recovering after he and his service dog fended off coyotes during an evening walk in their neighborhood.”Scary. It’s to be expected,” Chris Mack said.Mack and his dog, Bohdi the Boxer, were walking along Leatherwood Drive in the Country Creek neighborhood around 11 p.m. on Wednesday when the incident occurred. Mack said two coyotes appeared, one from each end of the street and another from a small patch of woods.Bohdi, who was on a leash, went after the first coyote so quickly that he pulled Mack to the ground, causing a bad scrape on his face and some scrapes on his arm. That’s when the second coyote appeared. “I took a hard knock. He took off with so much force that the dog took me with it, and at the same time, it let this one creep a little closer to me because I was on the ground. I called for him to return, and he came in like a bullet,” Mack said. “When a 95-pound dog comes at you at 35 miles per hour. You’re like a bowling pin. So the coyote took off well. He got pushed bull-dosed three and a half to four feet.” Mack said what happened was unpredictable. “It’s just nature, you can’t predict it. You just have to be aware of it. We are building so fast. You can’t expect these animals not to be around. When you take their space, you can’t expect them to poof disappear,” Mack said. Thanks to Bohdi the Boxer, the two coyotes have disappeared for now.The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is investigating the case.
