Join humans and their canine companions at Riverfront Esplanade in Daytona Beach on Saturday, May 3rd, for a celebratory “Walk for Animals” at 9 am, then from 10 am to 2 pm, plan to sit, stay, and play all day long in canine activity zones, no cost pet adoptions, a food truck rally, beer garden, and live DJs. NEW NAME, NEW LOCATION!
For more than a decade, the Halifax Humane Society has organized its Mutt Strut event at the Bandshell in Daytona Beach; it was the one time each year that dogs were allowed on the beach! Now that Volusia County Council has approved a permanent, year-round dog beach, Mutt Strut has relocated to the beautiful new Riverfront Esplanade in downtown Daytona Beach, allowing for more space to plan the day-long pet and family-friendly festival.
The event is also officially renamed “Brownie’s Mutt Strut” in honor of a true legend, Brownie, “The Town Dog,” who roamed the streets of downtown Daytona Beach from 1940 to 1954, capturing hearts and embodying the spirit of kindness and hope.
May 3rd is also the start of National Be Kind to Animals Week, the oldest celebratory week in America. “We could not think of a better way to celebrate Be Kind to Animals Week than with a fun-filled Mutt Strut right here in Brownie’s footsteps,” said Sean Hawkins, CAWA, CFRE, CEO of the Halifax Humane Society. “Every step taken at Brownie’s Mutt Strut helps provide food, shelter, and care for animals right here in Volusia County.”
NOT AN ORDINARY PET WALK!
This year, the world-famous “All-Star Stunt Dogs” show, featuring the country’s premier high-flying dog entertainers, will perform at 11 am, 12 pm, and 1 pm in the Boehringer-Ingelheim Stunt Dog Arena. Activity Zones throughout the park include the Pet Adoption Zone, sponsored by Hill’s Pet Nutrition, and the Canine Sports Zone, hosted by Fetch Pet Insurance, where dogs belonging to the public can participate in Swift Paws lure coursing.
The on-site food truck rally features Fat Boi Gourmet Potatoes, Cowabunga’s Ice Cream, and Kirby’s Filipino Asian Fusion, with friends from Daytona Beverages sponsoring a beer garden and specialty drinks, including the “Barky Mary”.

Every business or group participating in team fundraising is central to the Halifax Humane Society’s mission of preventing animal cruelty wherever it exists. This year, winning teams will enjoy a hosted day at Jackie Robinson Ballpark with the Tortugas or a VIP experience at the Daytona Aquarium for the entire pack!
Most importantly, every dollar raised will make a life-changing difference for the nearly 15,000 animals that will turn to the Halifax Humane Society for caring, compassion, and hope this year alone.
