She might have a string of accolades to her name, and an array of lavish costumes within her roster of award-winning roles, but when it comes to her personal style and beauty tastes, Alicia Vikander is a self-proclaimed minimalist. ‘When people think about Scandinavian style, they think minimalism. For me, that’s actually how I dress,’ says the Swedish actor and ELLE UK cover star of the September issue.
In ELLE’s recent Ask Me Anything, Vikander revealed her ‘pared-back’ everyday uniform which centres on high-quality materials, her affinity for architecture and the places she visits when she touches down in London. As for her beauty routine, the three products that never leave her handbag border the minimalist, the unexpected and the ultra luxe – and they might surprise you.

‘I’m one of those people who carries a huge handbag with me everywhere I go,’ she says. ‘I tend to have dry skin, so when I found Augustinus Bader’s The Rich Cream, I now use it morning and evening.’ Vikander is among a huge A-list fan base of Bader’s science-backed formula, which has been created by a stem-cell biologist and garnered a cult following from the likes of Alexa Chung and Gigi Hadid. Packed with vitamins, acids and a unique TFC8 complex (which boosts the skin’s repair process), the moisturiser makes light work of nourishing particularly dry skin, targetting fine lines and restoring the skin barrier.
On the opposite end of the spectrum is a Swedish-born lip balm or skin salve, Hudsalve Forsvaret, which was designed by the Swedish military in the 1950s to treat dry skin, and can be found in every drugstore in Sweden. ‘I’ve seen them in the UK too but it’s something you find usually in Sweden and it’s from the military. They use it to cook with it and you can apply it to your skin when it’s dry, but it’s perfect for dry lips. I always have one in my bag.’
Finally, she says, ‘because I’m now a mum, I always carry wet wipes with me. I have two packets in my bag with me.’
As for how she stayed grounded in an everchanging, always-on industry? ‘It’s very important for me to maintain a balance between my work and private life. I’ve also got my very close and very dear friends who have very much kept my feet on the ground.’
