Stairs can be an intimidating house feature for dogs to master, but one dog’s way of conquering it is nearly there. She’s just missing a crucial step—the U-turn.
In a TikTok video posted by user @sunnybunnythegolden on October 6, a golden retriever named Sunny and her owner were playing a game of fetch. The owner tossed the toy onto the stairs hoping the pup would finally figure out that she could turn around, but it wasn’t the time.
Sunny grabbed the toy that landed a few steps up from the bottom and while it would’ve been easier for her to turn around, she continued the only way she knew—up and up. Without skipping a beat, Sunny climbed the stairs to the top before she headed back down. She took the long way but maybe she just wanted the extra exercise.
The video’s caption reads: “In her mind, there’s no U-turn option.”
She’s nearly mastered the stairs and looks quite comfortable stepping on each one. But she’s making it harder on herself. She has yet to learn that you can turn around without going all the way up or down. That will come with time and practice, as it does for every dog training to use the stairs.

Newsweek reached out to @sunnybunnythegolden via TikTok for additional comment.
Not every owner lives in a home with different levels. Some dogs might not even discover stairs until their adult years, which might make them even more hesitant about the unusual contraption. In an article, Wag! Walking recommends on its website to introduce stairs as early as possible and during a puppy’s socialization period, and to consistently add it to training, if possible, because it will take them time to learn it.
