Adopter’s five-word answer changes life of shelter’s most overlooked dog

An Ohio animal shelter is celebrating the adoption of a dog named Addison who was one of the most overlooked.

A family recently came into the Brown County Humane Society Dog Shelter looking for a canine to adopt. They wanted a medium-sized dog who got along great with kids. When the shelter employees heard that, they immediately thought of Addison.

The shelter told the family that Addison had not received much attention since she came into their possession, however, she was “one of the sweetest dogs” there. One of the reasons why the shelter believed Addison was overlooked was because she has black fur and black dogs have a harder time getting adopted.

But Addison lucked out as the adopter responded: “Black dogs are my favorite.”

The animal shelter told Newsweek via Facebook that the family said Addison is “perfect.”

The humane society’s Facebook post about Addison’s adoption last Sunday immediately touched people’s hearts, amassing over 830 likes and 61 comments.

“So happy for Addison. I love black dogs. Thank you for picking her,” one Facebook user wrote.

A second added: “Awww, that’s fantastic. Sounds like the wait was for the absolutely perfect family to come along.”

A few Facebook users also expressed their confusion about why black dogs do not get the attention other dogs receive.

Unfortunately, cats and dogs with black fur fall under the same fate; they are less likely to get adopted. This is also known as black dog syndrome. A vet-approved article from Dogster that was published in November 2024 stated there are no definitive answers for why this happens, but a few theories have circled to offer a possible reason.

One explanation could be that the color black might not have the same mental response to visual stimuli. It is easier to overlook it. The use of black dogs to portray them as dangerous or evil in pop culture could also lead to people unknowingly thinking they are bad. And similar to cats, they might be seen as unlucky or superstitious.

Another reason why black furred pets might get overlooked is because they do not photograph as well. It takes special lighting to get a clear and crisp picture. Since many people scroll through images online when looking to adopt, a bad picture might prevent them from clicking on that dog or cat.

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
