With the Summer Solstice nearing on Friday, the Humane Educational Society (HES) wants to remind pet owners about adequate shelter laws for canines who stay outdoors.
Owners of outdoor-only dogs are required by Tennessee law to ensure their pets’ access to shelter, shade, water, food, and a clean environment.
“Those who do not comply with the new laws can be subject to fines, seizure of their animals, and possibly even jail time,” said HES in a Facebook post.
The Georgia Companion Animal Advocacy (GCAA) also said on their website that every outside dog requires 100 square feet of personal space a doghouse.
The doghouse “must have a floor that is elevated off the ground, with at least three sides and a roof that keeps moisture and wind out,” said the GCAA.
The organization invites individuals who require assistance complying with these laws to reach out to dispatch@heschatt.org to inquire about their need-based doghouse program.
HES is also accepting donations of doghouses in good condition.
