Despite having a rough start at life, a dog named Phoebe was recently adopted by a woman from New York City who is giving her the most spoiled life and the love and attention of the entire family just for her.
In a video shared on TikTok in December, under the username @jcwestsideisthebestside the pit bull terrier can be seen in her pyjamas watching TV with her grandparents, enjoying never-ending cuddles on the couch.
“Just a little dog who was abused and found abandoned on the street, but now you have a new family and sit by a Christmas fire with your ducky jammies and your grammy and papa,” the caption says.
The pup was found in March wandering the streets of Straussburg, Pennsylvania, and then taken to a local shelter. Not much was known about Phoebe when the poster adopted her, other than her fear of sticks, which still hasn’t gone away.
Shelters across the country are constantly overwhelmed with the arrival of new animals who have been found abandoned on the streets—over 6.3 million each year—which is an average of 17,260 new entries every single day.
Most of these pets are rehomed or returned to their original owners. However, almost a million end up being euthanized because shelters have no space to keep them, and pit bulls are among those that suffer from this the most.
Rescue Dog Home says on their website that pit bulls end up in shelter a lot more than any other dog breed, and are euthanized in the greatest numbers as well.
While at least 33 percent of dogs arriving in shelters are pit bulls, only about one in 600 will find a forever home. And that’s if they make it on the adoption list; about 75 percent of municipal shelters euthanize pit bulls immediately upon intake.
Often labeled as aggressive and dangerous, these pups are also banned or restricted in some states, including Michigan, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi.
Dr. Jess Kirk said in an article on Vet Explains Pets that pit bulls are not inherently aggressive, and they can be loyal and loving dogs when raised responsibly.
The video went viral on social media and it has so far received over 1.5 million views and 295,000 likes on the platform.
One user, Elissa Ede, commented: “Our pit bull was found abandoned in a crate on the highway in 90-degree weather. Heart worms, used as a puppy mill and malnourished. She has the best life now!!! Love every day! People can be mean!”
Nettie said: “I’m crying, the relief and contentment on that little face. But then I think of all the other scared and unloved dogs and it hurts my heart.”
Cdluhu added: “That baby is not spoiled…no sirreee not spoiled at all!”
