Abandoned El Paso house reveals grim scene with dog carcasses, rescuer steps in

A local dog rescuer is voicing her concerns after two small dogs and several dog carcasses were discovered at an abandoned house in northeast El Paso.

Elena Perez, a local animal rescuer who claimed she saves 60 to 70 dogs each month, said she helped rescue two more dogs from the property Tuesday night.

“It’s sad because this is not the only case that there is,” Perez said. “I’m sure there’s a lot more that are, you know, haven’t been seen yet.”

Perez explained that around 10 p.m. on Tuesday, she and her husband decided to act because animal control had not yet arrived, and temperatures were dropping.

“We grabbed our equipment and headed for the abandoned house,” she said.

Upon arrival, they found two Chihuahua dogs left alone in the backyard.

“The floor, everything has dilapidated, everything is falling aside, falling down inside,” Perez said, describing the scene. “But in the back, there was tons of garbage and no shelter for the dogs.”

Inside the house, Perez discovered a grim scene.

“There were multiple dead carcasses inside,” Perez said. “I mean, they had been there for a while.”

Animal Services confirmed that the house is currently vacant.

Yazmin Quezada, a field shift supervisor for Animal Services, said, “It’s not a surprising story. We often get a lot of calls regarding their dogs that are in a property without proper attention or proper signs of care.”

Quezada warned that those who abandon their dogs could face serious consequences.

“Anybody that is in violation with a cruelty can face up to a felony charge here in the state of Texas,” Quezada said.

Fines could reach up to $2,000, depending on the severity of the violation and judicial court decisions.

Animal Services turned the case over to the El Paso Police Department’s cruelty department for further investigation.
