Abandoned dog in desperate need of life-saving medical care

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Kobe is a young German short-haired pointer who was abandoned by his human, hit by a car and left for dead.

His sad eyes tell a tale of a tough life filled with pain and very little hope.

“Essentially, Kobe was found in the backroads of Waimanalo. He didn’t have identification on him. He had a pelvic fracture, unable to walk,” said Carolynn Duncan with Hawaii Pointer Rescue.

Duncan started the pointer rescue due to her love the breed and for her pointer, Chili, who has since crossed the Rainbow Bridge.

She says Kobe was taken to Feather and Fur Animal Hospital and even though he was microchipped, when they tried to contact his owners, they sadly did not respond. He was then taken to the Hawaiian Humane Society.

“They are required to have a five day hold for dogs with a microchip and again, they tried to contact owners and nothing,” she said.

Duncan was eventually able to take Kobe into her care. She took him in for a complete medical assessment and the news was not good. Upon further assessment, doctors found that Kobe will need a number of surgeries to fix all of his injuries, including his pelvic fracture.

“At the time that we picked him up, he was howling in pain for hours. Even on pretty basic pain meds, it was still very painful,” she said.

Despite that, there is some good news. Kobe is able to use his front legs to get around and Duncan says she can tell he has a desire to live.

“As soon as we got physical access of Kobe, he was on a gurney and he was going to be coming onto our car, and that dog, his first time being outside in nine days, right, these are bird dogs and he was kind of fixated on something,” she said. “I was on the other side of him and I thought, ‘What is he looking at?’ and I turned around and I saw that he totally razor focused on some birds.”

That’s all Duncan needed to move forward to try to get him the medical attention that he needs.

“The biggest thing is this dog survived nine days with a pelvic fracture and no surgical intervention and no family and he survived. There’s go to be something there,” she said.

Duncan says she doesn’t know why Kobe was abandoned or why his owners did not come forward after they were contacted based on the information on Kobe’s microchip.

What she does know is she will do everything to give Kobe a second chance in life.

“It’s a living being, that has a potential for joy and has a desire to live, let’s do it,” she said.

Kobe’s road to recovery will not be cheap. If you would like to help, there are a few places you can donate:

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
