The young poodle mix was found May 19 on Route 495 in Lawrence and taken to Angell Animal Medical Center in Boston.

The Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (MSPCA) announced that an abandoned dog found on a highway last week was humanely euthanized due to severe health issues.
Willie, a poodle mix, was found May 19 on I-495 in Lawrence and brought to Nevins Farm Adoption Center in Methuen, the MSPCA said in a statement May 21. He was later taken to Angell Animal Medical Center in Boston for advanced treatment.
“Willie was matted and emaciated when he was brought into the adoption center,” MSPCA Executive Director Chris Schindler said in the statement. “Angell veterinarians found him to be emaciated and extremely dehydrated.”
During Willie’s time at Angell, veterinarians also discovered that he had pneumonia and potential neurological problems, according to the statement.
Willie received around-the-clock treatment at Angell, but unfortunately, his health “took a turn for the worse” Tuesday night, resulting in the decision to euthanize him, an MSPCA spokesperson wrote in a statement to Boston.com.
“We’re very sad about Willie’s outcome, but the team at Angell did everything possible to help him recover,” the spokesperson wrote. “We take solace in knowing that he spent his last days around people fighting hard for him and showing him love.”
MSPCA Law Enforcement are seeking information about Willie’s history and owner, according to the May 21 statement.
“These cases are challenging because we’re starting from scratch,” Schnidler said in the statement. “That’s why we really need the community’s help here to learn how this poor pup got into the condition he was in when he came to us.”
Anyone with information about Willie is asked to contact MSPCA Law Enforcement at 617-522-6008 or call anonymously at 800-628-5808. Tips can also be submitted online.
