The first thing you notice at the new Camp Barkeley Dog Park are the trees. It’s also the first thing dogs notice, too, with each one claiming a tree in the unique manner of pups everywhere.
The City of Abilene’s dog park reopened Tuesday at its new location behind the Pet and Adoption Resource Center, or PARC, which is run by All Kind Animal Initiative and replaced the city’s old animal shelter last month.
A pack of top dogs featuring Mayor Weldon Hurt, Gary Grubbs and Parks and Recreation Director Lesli Andrews were led by the Chamber of Commerce’s Red Coats — and at least one real pooch — in cutting a ceremonial ribbon to open the new space.
The old Camp Barkeley was located near the Nelson Park Festival Gardens and while a great place for dogs to frolic off-leash, it lost that appeal for pet owners whenever temperatures soared past the mid-90s with nary a place to hide from the brutal sun.
While summertime temperatures are beyond the city’s control, the dozens of trees left standing within the two enclosures — and the park benches beneath some of them — ensure at least a more pleasant experience for owners as well as their pets.
