LAKE PLACID, Fla. – A Lake Placid man has been arrested after deputies say they found numerous emaciated dogs on his property, including one that was nursing puppies.
Deputies with the Highlands County Sheriff’s Office went to a home on Flamingo Street in Lake Placid on Monday to investigate a report of an extremely emaciated dog in the area.
Investigators say the dog belonged to 42-year-old James Ididson Barfield.

While some of the dogs were in good shape, six of them that were in a kennel tucked in the corner of the backyard showed signs of serious neglect, according to HCSO.

Deputies said there was no food or water in the kennels, and they had not been cleaned in a while.
The six dogs, according to investigators, were emaciated to the point where their bone structure was visible and the dog that led to the initial call was nursing four puppies.

All the dogs and puppies from the kennel were seized by Animal Services.

Deputies say the other dogs were left in the care of a family member at the home, and Animal Services officers will be making regular visits to the home in the future to make sure they are being cared for properly.

Barfield was charged with six counts of animal cruelty. His bond was set at $30,000.
