- The Humane Society of Monroe County is experiencing a critical shortage of space due to an influx of animals.
- The Humane Society is urging the community to consider fostering or adopting, with same-day adoptions available and comprehensive support provided to foster families.
MONROE COUNTY — If you’re looking to adopt or foster a pet, now is a good time.
The Humane Society of Monroe County, 911 S. Raisinville Road in Monroe, is completely out of space and is seeking help from the community.
“We do not have any more room to house any more large or extra-large homeless dogs. We need foster and adopters ASAP to be able to save these animals. Please help us,” the organization posted on social media this week.
Amy Cunningham, the facility’s manager for the last year, cited a couple reason for the uptick in animals, especially dogs.
“People get new dogs for Christmas and dump them when it doesn’t work out. A lot of people are losing their homes as well because everything is expensive,” Cunningham said Tuesday morning.
She said families can take home animals immediately. Facility hours are noon-5 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays, but other times can be arranged.
“I would love for (local people) to come in. I can meet them any time. I would stay late. I’ve been here at 7 a.m. and stayed to 8 at night to get dogs out,” Cunningham said.

Cunningham said the Humane Society of Monroe County currently has 70 dogs, including puppies and a pit bull mom and her seven puppies. Miracle also is there. A year-old Shih Tzu, Miracle recently came in with matted fur, an infected eye and other health problems.
“If you can foster, we will provide everything needed. A foster home helps the ones needing just a little more socialization to gain the confidence to join a new family. So please call, if even for a few weeks, you can make all the difference,” the shelter said.
“Everything needed,” Cunningham said, includes food. Animals also are up-to-date on shots and have been fixed.
The adoption fee for mixed-breed dogs over 20 pounds is $200, which includes tracking chips and up-to-date shots. The animals also have been fixed.
Last week the facility lowered the adoption fees. Just one dog was adopted.
The Humane Society of Monroe County also has cats.
“We don’t have a ton of cats. Cats go pretty quickly,” Cunningham said.
