When Dune introduced an oversized version of its woven shoulder bag into its AW24 collection, no one could have predicted what a cult following the Deliberate XL would amass. Celebrities such as Olivia Wilde, Emilia Clarke and Katie Holmes (traffic on the brand’s website spiked when the actress was photographed strutting around New York City with the tan faux suede iteration swung over her shoulder) have been spotted wearing the slouchy, oversized design.
And it’s not just Hollywood the high street bag has won over either. On social media, influencers like Zoe Sugg, Billie Bhatia and Lizzy Hadfield (just to name a few) have all carried the bag in various sizes and colours. The Deliberate is now the most searched-for bag on the Dune website, as well as its most-viral product on TikTok and one of its most-tagged on Instagram.
While the XL might be the most in-demand size – the £149 shoulder bag has sold out four times and, for those interested, has just been restocked – the woven design is available in three more iterations: the dinky XS size retails for £99 and is perfect for a night out; the standard size fits a notebook and umbrella and sells for £109; and the L size, which launched last week, is priced at £129 and easily fits a laptop.
So why can’t the fashion set get enough of this slouchy silhouette? Well, firstly the Deliberate XL perfectly plays into the supersized handbag trend that marries prettiness and practicality (we’re busy women who need an office tote that fits all our everyday essentials, including a laptop, gym kit and a reusable water bottle).
Secondly, thanks to the craftsmanship involved – each design is completely handwoven and it takes an expert a minimum of ten hours to weave the XL bag – the shoulder bag looks far more expensive than its high street price tag.
Then, of course, there’s the shade range. Katie Holmes’s tan Deliberate combined two of the season’s biggest trends – and we’re certain the newly-released chocolate brown iteration won’t stick around for long either. But if you’re holding out for lighter tones, Dune will be launching the XL in new colourways this spring, including cream and a new tan mix.
