MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – Two dogs are recovering after police said a Myrtle Beach man let them stay in filth.
The Myrtle Beach Police Department responded just before 3 p.m. Friday to an apartment on 67th Avenue North for a call about animal neglect.
Police met with the property manager, who, according to a police report, said they found two male pit bulls extremely malnourished and underweight.
An officer went inside the apartment and found “an environment of intense unsanitary conditions,” according to the report. The report also states there wasn’t any food or water for the dogs, and there appeared to be “animal waste in every room” of the apartment.
MBPD said the apartment is registered to James Felton. The agency charged Felton with two misdemeanors of animal abandonment/mistreatment, jail records show.
He remains booked at the Myrtle Beach jail as of writing.
As for the dogs, they were taken to the Grand Strand Humane Society.
GSHS Executive Director Jessica Wnuk said that the dogs are safe and in good spirits. She also added that they are on a feeding schedule to help get them to a healthy weight.
The dogs’ future remains unclear.
Wnuk explained that she wasn’t sure if the dogs would be for foster or adoption since the case is still under investigation.
