Chinese Zoo Once Again Under Fire After Painting Dogs To Look Like Tigers

Are there seriously people still falling for this?

A zoo in Taizhou, Jiangsu Province, China, is facing major backlash after a video surfaced this past week showing Chow Chow dogs dyed orange with black stripes in a ridiculous attempt to pass them off as tigers. The footage shows the pups pacing around a small, fenced-in enclosure—and honestly, you just gotta see the video for yourself:

See, those dogs don’t look like tigers in the slightest. What’s even more hilarious to me is that the tiny enclosure they’re stuck in doesn’t even remotely resemble a tiger exhibit. I guess I could maybeee see a kid getting excited from seeing the stripes, but surely any adult with functioning eyes is not tricked by the “tiger” who pants and wags its tail.

The zoo’s management acknowledged the practice, so it doesn’t sound like they’re even trying to fool people anymore after getting busted, but defended themselves saying that the dyes used were safe and that the goal was to offer a unique experience for visitors in the absence of real tigers at the facility.

Okay then, the zoo has no tigers, so this was their effort to try to give that effect? I guess? The park did promote itself on a Douyin livestream saying “Our tigers are huge and very fierce!” So the sarcasm makes it seem like a joke. But is the joke getting taken too far?

And if the goal of this prank is to get them more attention, it seems they are achieving just that. But I would’t say it is all praise worthy attention… Some are worried the dye caught cause harm to the chow chow puppies, or just the fact that they are getting full-on painted in the first place can be seen as inhumane.

But get this: The best part about all of this is that this isn’t Taizhou Zoo’s first rodeo. Are you getting Deja Vu yet?

You might remember the painted panda dogs from last year. Yep, those were from the same zoo that brought us this whole fiasco. I guess they didn’t learn their lesson the first time. Here’s what those panda dogs looked like if you don’t remember:

I will say, the pandas for sure looked a lot more believable than the tigers, and they’re really cute. But something just feels wrong about the “tigers.” It’s like you are looking at a science project gone wrong. But still, how are we catching this zoo in the act TWICE?

And if there are no real pandas or tigers, what is there? I guess the painted dogs are the main attraction these days, so they better capitalize on that. But even better…just get real animals! Or don’t call yourself a zoo. At this point, if your tigers and pandas are barking it has probably gone way too far.

At this rate, it’s only a matter of time before we start seeing dogs that look like lions, giraffes, or zebras. And I can’t wait to see what’s next.

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
