A dog bite incident may have injured two people this morning about 10:4O on the 1400 block of Reasor Road in McKinleyville.
According to reports over the scanner, emergency personnel responded to a 62-year-old woman who got a large laceration to her mouth and also a bite on her right arm. This is confirmed. However, a second individual, may have suffered a bite to her breast. But that hasn’t been confirmed. According to the first reports that came over the scanner, the second victim may have taken the dog into a nearby apartment.
We have reached out to a spokesperson for the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Department as deputies and animal control responded to the scene, but have not yet received a response. Because it is the weekend, we might not get a response for several days.
Preventing Dog Bites
In California, children are the most frequent victims of dog bites, with boys under 10 being the most likely to require emergency treatment for their injuries. However, dog bites can happen in a variety of situations to a variety of different ages, but there are steps people can take to reduce the risk:
- Avoid approaching unfamiliar dogs—especially if they appear nervous, aggressive, or are eating or caring for puppies.
- Let dogs initiate contact—even a friendly pet may react defensively if startled.
- Teach children proper interactions—pulling ears or tails, hugging too tightly, or running up suddenly can provoke a defensive response.
- Respect a dog’s space—cornering or surprising a dog can lead to a bite.
- Be aware of warning signs—stiff posture, bared teeth, growling, or intense staring may indicate discomfort or aggression. (See here for more information.)
